Cyanobacteria Resources

Cyanobacteria are a type of waterborne organism which can cause illness in people and animals during an active bloom. These effects can be as mild as skin irritation, but can be as severe as seizures and vomiting. Cyanobacteria growth is encouraged by excess nutrient content in surface water which can occur through failed septic systems, fertilizer use close to the shore, and loss of vegetation along the shore, either through natural or human causes. Unfortunately, cyanobacteria continue to be a major concern in Center Harbor, as water bodies in our area have had significant blooms in recent years. NHDES runs a report-based surveillance and warning system in conjunction with local health officers to help prevent illness from exposure to cyanobacteria. We encourage residents and visitors to be watchful for cyanobacteria, stay out of the water if you suspect its presence, and to contact the Health Officer for assistance if you have any questions or suspect illness in a person or animal after contact with lake water in Center Harbor. If you would like further information, need to report a possible bloom, or would like additional information about the safety of water bodies in the area for recreation, please visit the NHDES links below.
