July 13, 2016 - Before any foundation repairs can be done at the Town House, archeologist Jessica Cofelice will determine how likely it is that historic artifacts may lie hidden underneath the building. Almost like opening King Tut's tomb...
Buried treasure? Historic archeologist Jessica Cofelice digs a small test pit...
Notice the four different-colored layers of soil in the test pit. The third layer from the top, about 4.5 inches down, indicates where the top of the soil probably was when the Town House was built in 1844. The light-colored layer is fill, perhaps from when the foundation was dug.
Archeologist Jessica Cofelice compares soil from the test pit to a soil color chart to determine its composition, and then records her observations.
After taking some GPS readings, archeologist Jessica Cofelice will be off to the State Library to research historical maps of the area. This archeological sensitivity study is funded by donations to the Heritage Fund.
